OpenAI said at DevDay 2026 that it now serves 1.2 billion weekly users, and Anthropic reported in April 2026 that more than 1,000 business customers each spend over $1 million a year on Claude. What those assistants usually cannot do is touch the chatbot you built for the client: read its logs, fix a step, draft a WhatsApp template or sort out the inbox.

Claude MCP and ChatGPT MCP connections close that gap. With the Model Context Protocol, a client’s own assistant can connect to ChatMaxima and inspect, build and test their bots in plain language. For an agency, that is a new service line: you set up the connection, decide what each person can reach, write the playbooks and train the team.

This guide expands idea 25 from our list of 25 AI agent business ideas with pricing math, the MCP integration service. It covers what MCP is in practical terms, how to connect Claude and ChatGPT, the playbooks worth selling, the security setup and how to price it.

What MCP Is, in One Paragraph

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to the systems where work happens. Anthropic introduced it in November 2024, and it spread fast: OpenAI added support in March 2025, Microsoft brought it to Windows and Copilot Studio, and Google now runs more than 50 managed MCP servers of its own. In December 2025 Anthropic donated MCP to the new Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and AWS among its platinum members (Linux Foundation, 2025). At that point Anthropic counted more than 10,000 active public MCP servers and over 97 million monthly SDK downloads.

In plain terms: an MCP server exposes a set of tools, an MCP client (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and others) lets the assistant call them, and the user approves the connection once. The assistant does the thinking; the server does the work.

Why This Is an Agency Opportunity

Large companies are pulling ahead on agents. In McKinsey’s 2026 State of AI survey, 40% of respondents at organizations with more than $1 billion in revenue said they were scaling AI agents, up from 27% a year earlier, while the figure at smaller organizations stayed flat at 22% (McKinsey, 2026). Smaller businesses have the same assistants on their laptops; what they lack is someone to connect those assistants to their systems safely and show their team how to use them.

That is a classic agency job. The platform pieces already exist:

The assistant your client already pays for.

The MCP server, in this case ChatMaxima’s, which exposes their bots, inbox and WhatsApp assets as tools.

Your expertise: which connections to make, who gets which access, which tasks to automate, and what to check before anything goes live.

What a Client’s Assistant Can Do With ChatMaxima Over MCP

ChatMaxima’s MCP server lives at
https://chatmaxima.com/mcp
and exposes around 50 tools, grouped by job. The MCP server page has the setup steps and video walkthroughs.

Build and edit bots

The assistant can list bots, read a bot’s blocks, create a new bot, add and connect blocks, update or delete a block, rename a bot and tidy the canvas. It reads each block type’s exact schema before adding it, and it can look up the client’s real connected accounts, integrations, knowledge bases, calendars, labels and spreadsheet columns instead of guessing them.

If two people edit the same bot at once, for example a client on Claude and your team in the dashboard, the server detects the conflict and returns the current version instead of silently overwriting either change.

Test and diagnose

Run a test conversation against the real bot runtime and read the transcript.

Analyze executions over 1 to 90 days: blocks that error, blocks that are slow, branches that never run, places where conversations drop off, and loops, each with a suggested fix. This needs execution tracing switched on for the bot.

Drill into one execution step to see its input, output and timing.

Work the inbox, without speaking for the business

The assistant can list and read conversations and tickets, check unread counts, assign a conversation to an agent or department, change its status, add existing labels, pause or resume the bot, and leave internal notes for the team.

It cannot send messages to customers. Replies stay with your client’s team or their bot, which is the right default for a tool driven by a general-purpose assistant.

WhatsApp templates and Flows

Templates: list existing templates, browse a template library, validate a draft, and submit a new template to Meta for approval. Submitting requires an explicit confirmation from the user.

WhatsApp Flows: list and read Flows, and create or update draft Flows. Publishing a Flow stays a click in the dashboard.

What it does not do

MCP does not replace the dashboard. Over MCP the assistant cannot connect channels or WhatsApp numbers, publish Flows, delete whole bots, send broadcasts, manage billing or team members, or create and edit contacts. Plan your service around that: connections and launches happen in the dashboard, everyday changes and checks happen in the assistant.

How to Connect Claude or ChatGPT

Menus in both assistants change often, so check the current help pages when you write your client’s setup guide. The steps below were current in October 2026.

Claude MCP setup

Custom connectors using remote MCP are available on Claude, Claude Desktop and Cowork for Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans; Free users are limited to one custom connector. On Team plans only Owners and Primary Owners can add connectors (Claude Help Center).

In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, then + Add, then Add custom connector.

Paste
https://chatmaxima.com/mcp
and save.

Sign in to ChatMaxima when prompted and approve the connection.

ChatGPT MCP setup

OpenAI’s rules are tighter. Full MCP connections, which include the tools that make changes, are available on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu on the web, and only admins and owners can publish them. Pro users can connect custom MCP servers with read and fetch permissions only, and connectors are not available in the mobile apps (OpenAI Help Center).

On ChatGPT web, open Plugins, select +, then Add custom MCP server.

Paste
https://chatmaxima.com/mcp
.

Sign in to ChatMaxima and approve the connection.

So before you sell a ChatGPT setup, check the client’s plan. A Pro account can read bots and logs but cannot make changes.

What the client sees when they approve

ChatMaxima uses a standard OAuth sign-in. The consent screen names the app that wants to connect, and if the user belongs to several ChatMaxima workspaces it lists them all with a choice of default workspace. Every workspace is ticked by default; untick any workspace the connection should not reach. Access can be revoked at any time under Settings, Connected Apps, and revocation takes effect immediately.

Other MCP clients work too. Cursor and the Gemini CLI connect with the same URL, and any client that supports Streamable HTTP MCP servers can be added the same way. ChatMaxima API keys are an alternative to OAuth on paid developer plans.

One Connection, Many Client Workspaces

For agencies this is the important part. A single OAuth connection can cover every ChatMaxima workspace that the same login belongs to. Inside the assistant you can ask it to list your workspaces and switch between them, or name the workspace in the request (“in the Northside Fitness workspace, run the weekly bot check”).

Two details keep this safe:

Roles are checked per workspace. If your login is an admin in one client’s workspace and an agent in another, the assistant gets bot-building tools in the first and only inbox tools in the second.

The consent screen controls reach. Untick the workspaces a connection should never touch, for example clients whose contract does not cover this service.

For client staff, the same logic means you can give each person exactly what their role allows. A support agent connecting Claude sees inbox tools; a bot manager sees builder tools.

Playbooks Worth Selling

The setup takes an afternoon. The value is in the playbooks: tested prompts the client’s team can reuse, written for their bots and their workspace. Five that work well:

1. The weekly bot health check

In the [client] workspace, analyze executions for the [bot name] bot over the last 7 days. List any blocks that error, branches that never run and places where people drop off. For each, suggest a fix, and do not change anything yet.

This turns execution logs into a short report a non-technical owner can act on.

2. Safe bot edits

Open the [bot name] bot. After the welcome message, add a question asking for the customer’s postcode and save it to a variable called postcode. Show me the plan first, then make the change and run a test conversation.

Asking for a plan and a test every time is the habit that keeps edits safe.

3. WhatsApp template drafting

Draft a WhatsApp marketing template for our autumn class schedule, in English, with a “View schedule” button. Validate it against Meta’s rules and show me the final text. Only submit it after I say yes.

4. Inbox triage

List open WhatsApp conversations that are unassigned. Assign any about billing to the Accounts department and add an internal note summarising the customer’s question. Do not change anything else.

5. WhatsApp Flow drafts

Create a draft WhatsApp Flow for booking a trial class: name, phone, preferred class and preferred day. Keep it as a draft so I can review and publish it in the dashboard.

Each playbook should state the workspace, the bot, what the assistant may change, and when it must stop and ask.

Security: What to Set Up Before You Hand Over

An assistant with tools is powerful, and the risks are well documented. Prompt injection is the first item in the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications, including indirect injection, where instructions arrive inside content the model reads (OWASP, 2025). Claude’s own help page warns that malicious MCP servers may include hidden instructions, and OpenAI’s warns that untrusted servers increase exposure to prompt injection. The MCP specification maintains a security best practices page covering token handling, consent and scope.

A practical checklist for every client:

Connect only servers you trust, and keep the number of connectors in the same assistant small. A conversation that reads an untrusted page and has write tools available is where injection risks live.

Scope workspaces on the consent screen and give each person the narrowest ChatMaxima role that does their job.

Keep confirmations on. ChatMaxima requires an explicit confirmation before submitting a WhatsApp template or adding a column to a client’s spreadsheet, and marks block edits and deletions as destructive so assistants that support it ask first.

Test against test data. A test run simulates side-effect blocks such as emails, WhatsApp messages, payments, API requests and webhooks, but AI agent blocks and integrations such as Google Sheets or a CRM really run. Point them at test records.

Review the Connected Apps list each month and revoke anything unused. ChatMaxima also rate-limits MCP calls per workspace (120 calls and 30 changes per minute), which caps the damage a runaway session can do.

Write it down. A one-page policy covering who can connect, which workspaces, and which playbooks are approved is part of what the client is paying for.

A First Client Engagement, Step by Step

Here is how a typical first engagement can run for a client with two or three bots and a small support team.

Discovery call. List the client’s bots, channels and the people who will use the assistant. Check which assistant and plan each person has, so you know whether ChatGPT users can make changes or only read.

Access design. Decide which ChatMaxima role each person needs. Owners and bot managers get builder tools; support staff get inbox tools only. Agree which workspaces each connection may reach.

Connect and verify. Add the connector in each person’s assistant, approve the consent screen with the right workspaces ticked, and run a harmless first request together, such as “list my bots”.

Write the playbooks. Start with the weekly health check and safe edits for each bot, then add inbox triage and template drafting where they fit. Test every playbook yourself before handing it over.

Train the team. A one-hour session: how to phrase requests, when the assistant will ask for confirmation, what it cannot do, and who to call when something looks wrong.

First review. After two weeks, run the health check together, revoke any connections nobody uses, and adjust the playbooks to how the team actually works.

By the end, the client has a working setup, a written policy and a library of prompts that fit their business, which is the deliverable that justifies a setup fee.

How to Price an MCP Integration Service

Idea 25 in our business ideas list priced this at $2,500 per setup, with 4 setups a month coming to $10,000 a month, plus a support retainer to make the revenue recurring. That is an illustrative model, not a promise, but the structure holds:

Setup fee. Connect the assistants, scope workspaces and roles, write 5 to 10 playbooks for the client’s bots, run a training session and deliver the security policy.

Monthly retainer. Maintain the playbooks as bots change, run the weekly health check, review connected apps and handle new requests.

Add-on builds. New bots or major changes, often built faster now that the assistant does the wiring. Our guide to the no-code AI agent builder workflow covers pricing builds that take hours instead of days.

Costs on your side stay low. The client’s own assistant does the reasoning, so MCP calls do not use ChatMaxima’s MaxIA credits; the client pays for their own Claude or ChatGPT plan, and the bots’ own AI usage is billed as normal.

If you run several clients under your own brand, see our guide to the white label AI platform model for how agencies structure workspaces and pricing.

Common Mistakes

Selling a ChatGPT setup without checking the plan. Full MCP needs Business or Enterprise/Edu; Pro is read-only.

Leaving every workspace ticked. Scope each connection to the clients it should reach.

Giving everyone admin access. Roles decide which tools appear; use them.

Skipping the plan-then-test habit. Every playbook that changes a bot should ask for a plan and end with a test conversation.

Assuming tests are sandboxed. AI and integration blocks run for real; use test data.

Expecting the assistant to reply to customers. It works the inbox for the team; it does not message customers.

No written policy. Without one, the first mistake becomes a dispute.

Start Your MCP Service With ChatMaxima

Claude MCP and ChatGPT MCP turn the assistant your client already uses into a control panel for their chatbots: weekly health checks, safe edits, template drafts and inbox triage, all in plain language.
