A user gets stuck on a settings screen, opens a new tab, searches the help center, gives up and sends an email that someone answers tomorrow. By then they have either found a workaround or started looking at a competitor.

A SaaS chatbot built as an in-app support agent closes that gap. It sits inside the product, knows who the user is and what plan they are on, answers from the product’s own documentation, can check or change things through the product’s API, and hands over to a human when it should. Few agencies offer this, because it sits between a chatbot project and a software integration. That is exactly why it is worth learning.

This guide expands idea 18 from our list of 25 AI agent business ideas with pricing math, the in-app support agent for SaaS and mobile apps. It covers why the work pays, the three ways to put an agent inside a product, how to make it know the user, and how to price it.

Why In-App Support Is Worth Selling

Customers do try to help themselves. A Gartner survey of 5,728 customers found that 73% use self-service at some point in their journey, but only 14% of customer service issues are fully resolved in self-service, and in 43% of failures the customer could not find content relevant to their issue (Gartner, 2024). The appetite is there; the answers are not where the user is.

The economics are why clients care. Gartner’s 2019 benchmark put live channels (phone, live chat, email) at an average of $8.01 per contact, against about $0.10 for self-service channels such as company websites and mobile apps (Gartner, 2019). The figures are old, but the gap is the point: every question answered inside the product is a ticket nobody has to work.

And the cost of not helping is real. In Zendesk’s CX Trends 2025 survey, 63% of consumers said they would switch to a competitor after a single bad experience (Zendesk, 2024). For mobile apps the margin for error is even thinner: average retention falls to around 7% by day 30 across apps (Adjust benchmarks, around 2024), and in a smaller 2020 survey, 8 in 10 users said they had deleted an app because they did not know how to use it (Wyzowl, 2020).

Why a generic chatbot is not enough

Users now have ChatGPT and Claude one tab away. Gartner found customers are about three times more likely to use third-party generative AI tools than a company’s own chatbot for service (Gartner, 2026). A general assistant can explain concepts, but it cannot see the user’s account, their plan or the error they just hit. An in-app support agent can. That product context is the reason to build one, and the reason a client will pay an agency to do it properly.

What a SaaS Chatbot Should Actually Do

A good SaaS chatbot is more than an FAQ bot in a bubble. It does five jobs:

Knows the user. Name, email, plan, account status, maybe the screen they are on, passed in from the product so nobody has to ask “what is your account email?”

Answers how-to questions from the product’s own content: help center, docs, release notes, onboarding guides.

Checks or changes things through the client’s API: plan limits, usage, invoice status, a password reset link, a feature toggle.

Hands over to a human with the conversation and the user’s details attached, when the question is about billing disputes, bugs or anything sensitive.

Creates a ticket when a problem needs follow-up, so nothing lives only in a chat window.

Three Ways to Put the Agent Inside a Product

ChatMaxima offers three routes into a client’s product. All three run the same bots, the same AI agent and the same shared inbox, so you build the support logic once.

Route

Best for

What you add to the product

Website chat widget

Web-based SaaS dashboards

A script tag, plus the signed-in user’s details

Flutter SDK

Android and iOS apps built with Flutter

A package and a channel key

App Channel REST API

Any stack, with the client’s own chat screen

API calls to send, a webhook to receive

1. The website widget inside a web app

For most SaaS products this is the fastest route. The ChatMaxima widget goes into the logged-in app with the usual snippet, and the app passes the signed-in user’s details in its configuration: name, email and phone, plus any extra fields you want, such as
plan
,
account_id
or
trial_ends
. ChatMaxima saves those extra fields as custom attributes on the contact, creating them automatically.

We do this in ChatMaxima’s own dashboard: our support widget receives each user’s plan, plan status, workspace name and plan dates, so the agent never has to ask which plan someone is on. The widget uses these details when both a name and an email are passed.

If the client wants a full-page assistant rather than a bubble, for example a “Help” page inside the product, the same bot can be published as a MaxApp, an embedded chat app that fills a page or a container.

2. The Flutter SDK for mobile apps

For mobile apps built with Flutter, the client creates an App Channel in ChatMaxima (Channels, then Mobile App) and gets a channel key that can be locked to the app’s bundle IDs. The Flutter SDK, available from ChatMaxima’s GitHub repository, adds a ready-made chat screen for Android and iOS with bot and live-agent replies in real time, typing indicators, read receipts, image, voice-note and file sharing, conversation history and server-side theming. If the bot includes an AI voice agent, a call button appears too.

Know the current limits before you quote: the SDK is Flutter only (there is no native Swift, Kotlin or React Native SDK), it has no push notifications yet, and bot buttons and carousels currently arrive as plain text, so design mobile flows around typed replies. The SDK passes the user’s name, email and phone. Our introduction to in-app live chat support for mobile apps and the overview of the ChatMaxima mobile app SDK cover the mobile side in more depth.

3. The App Channel REST API for a custom chat screen

When a client wants the chat to look exactly like the rest of their product, or uses a stack the SDK does not cover, the App Channel REST API lets them build their own chat screen. The app sends each message to ChatMaxima with the user’s details and up to 50 custom attributes, plus
contact_ref_id
, the client’s own user id. Replies come back as signed webhooks (HMAC-SHA256), covering bot and agent messages including buttons and lists, plus events when a conversation is assigned or its status changes. History can be read back through the API.

This route needs a workspace API key, which is available on ChatMaxima’s Pro plan and above.

Make the Agent Know the User

Product context is what turns a chatbot into a support agent, and it is where most of your build time should go.

Pass context in, use it as variables

Every custom attribute the product passes in, through the widget or the REST API, becomes available to the bot as a variable with the same name. If the app passes
account_id
, a message can say “I can see your account” and an API Request block can call the client’s backend with
{account_id}
in the URL, then save the response to a variable the bot uses in its reply.

A typical support flow for a SaaS client looks like this:

The user asks “why can’t I add another teammate?”

The AI agent recognises a plan-limit question.

An API Request block calls the client’s API for the account’s seat usage.

The agent replies with the actual numbers and the upgrade path, or hands over to sales if the account is on a custom contract.

Conditions and If/Else blocks branch on the result, a Code block can reshape a response with JavaScript, and a Webhook block can notify the client’s systems.

Keep account actions safe

Here is the rule to agree with every client: details passed from the browser or app are not proof of identity. ChatMaxima stores what the product sends; it does not independently verify it. So the client’s API, not the chatbot, must decide what a request is allowed to do.

In practice:

Read-only lookups first. Usage, plan, invoice status and order status are low-risk wins.

Let the client’s backend authorize every call. Pass a short-lived, server-issued token as an attribute and have the client’s API check it, rather than trusting a bare user id.

Keep destructive actions behind a human or behind the product’s own confirmation screens. A support agent that can delete data on request is a support agent someone will try to trick.

Ground the answers in the product’s content

For how-to questions, connect a Knowledge Source to the MaxIA AI agent: crawl the help center, upload product docs and add custom question-and-answer pairs for the questions the support team answers every week. Gartner’s finding that 43% of self-service failures come from missing content applies here too, so plan for content gaps. Our knowledge base chatbot guide walks through building and testing this part.

Hand Over to Humans the Right Way

Customers want AI help, but they want a way out. In a 2026 Gartner survey, 87% of customers said companies using generative AI for service must provide access to a human agent (Gartner, 2026), and only 27% said they would try a chatbot again after a negative experience (Gartner, 2026).

In ChatMaxima, a Talk to Agent block passes the conversation to the client’s team in the shared inbox, with the user’s attributes already on the contact, so the agent sees the plan and account without asking. A Create Ticket block raises a helpdesk ticket for issues that need follow-up. Tell users when they are talking to AI, and make the human option easy to find, not a hidden escape hatch.

Which SaaS Chatbot Clients to Target

Not every software company is a good first client. Look for three signals: a product with enough active users that support volume hurts, a help center that exists but is not used, and a development team willing to expose a few read-only API endpoints.

Good fits include:

B2B SaaS with self-serve plans, where most tickets are about setup, limits, billing and integrations.

Vertical software for clinics, schools, gyms, property managers or logistics, where users are not technical and ask the same questions every week.

Marketplaces and booking apps, where order or booking status is the top question and the answer already lives in the client’s database.

Fintech and subscription apps, as long as account actions stay read-only or go through the product’s own confirmation screens.

Weaker fits are products with tiny user bases, products whose answers change daily without anyone updating the docs, and clients who will not give API access. Without context and content, the agent cannot do much better than a search box.

An Agency Playbook for the First Client

A first engagement for a SaaS client with a few thousand active users usually runs in five steps.

Mine the tickets. Export the last three months of support tickets and group them. In most products, a short list of question types covers the bulk of volume: how-to, plan and billing, errors, integrations and account access.

Design the context. Agree with the client’s developers which user details the product will pass (user id, plan, account status, role) and which read-only API endpoints the agent may call.

Build and ground. Build the bot with the AI agent, knowledge source, API Request steps for the top account questions, handoff and ticket creation. Connect the help center and fill the gaps the ticket review exposed.

Test like a user. Test each flow with real test accounts on different plans, including a user whose details are missing. Check every answer that quotes a number against the product itself.

Launch in stages. Start on one part of the product, such as the settings or billing pages, review the conversations weekly, then widen.

What to measure

Resolution without a human: conversations that ended without handoff or a ticket, checked against a sample of transcripts.

Tickets per active user, before and after launch.

Handoff reasons, which show the next content or API work to do.

Satisfaction on handed-over conversations, so the AI is not hiding problems.

Be honest with clients about outcomes. Gartner reported in 2026 that service leaders put a median 12% of their budget into AI, but only 24% showed positive financial returns (Gartner, 2026). The agencies that keep clients are the ones that measure, report and keep tuning.

How to Price an In-App Support Agent

Idea 18 in our business ideas list priced this service at $1,500 a month, so 7 clients reach about $10,500 a month. That is an illustrative model, not a promise, but the structure holds because the work is ongoing:

Setup fee for ticket analysis, context design, the API integration, knowledge base build and testing. Integration work varies, so scope it per client.

Monthly retainer for weekly conversation reviews, content updates when the product changes, new API flows and reporting.

Add-ons: a mobile app rollout through the SDK, a voice agent, or a custom chat screen on the REST API.

Mobile apps have one more argument for clients: support conversations that would otherwise end in a one-star review. Google notes that replying to a negative review can raise that rating by an average of 0.7 stars (Google Play Console); solving the problem inside the app before it reaches the store is better still.

See the plans on our pricing page when you scope which routes a client needs, since the REST API route needs the Pro plan or above.

Common Mistakes

Treating it as an FAQ bot. Without user context and API lookups, it is just a slower help center.

Trusting passed-in details as identity. Let the client’s API authorize every account action.

Letting the bot take destructive actions. Keep them behind a human or the product’s own screens.

Promising features the channel lacks. On mobile, plan for no push notifications and text replies instead of buttons in the current SDK.

Skipping the ticket review. It tells you what to build first.

Hiding the human option. It costs trust you will not get back.

No reporting. Without numbers, the retainer looks optional.

Build Your First SaaS Chatbot With ChatMaxima

An in-app support agent is one of the few AI agent services where an agency becomes part of the client’s product. The work combines a chatbot, the product’s content, a careful API integration and ongoing tuning, which is why few agencies offer it and why clients keep paying for it. With ChatMaxima you can put the same agent in a web app, a Flutter mobile app or a custom chat screen, give it the user’s context, ground it in the docs and hand over to humans cleanly.

Compare plans on our pricing page, and browse the other AI agent business ideas for services that pair well with this one.

A SaaS chatbot that knows the user, answers from the docs and acts through the product’s API.
